Ultium Cells announced the completion of the steel structure of the lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing facility at its Spring Hill, Tennessee, site. The final beam was installed on June 8.

The joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution reached a major milestone in 6 months, after more than 550,000 hours of construction, and is on track to start battery production in the fourth quarter of 2023.

The upcoming Spring Hill, Tennessee plant is the second Ultium Cells plant under construction in the United States, and was announced in April 2021. The first, in Warren, Ohio, is expected to start very soon – in August 2022.

According to the Ultium Cells website, the first plant’s annual output will be over 35 GWh with room for expansion – we assume the Tennessee plant could have similar output.

There is also Ultium Cells’ third plant under construction in Lansing, Michigan. This was announced in January 2022 and will start production in the third quarter of 2024. In other words, a new battery factory every year. The third plant could be the largest of the three, since its annual production target is 50 GWh.

Rumor has it that General Motors and LG Energy Solution may decide to build a total of four joint battery gigafactories with a combined total output well over 100 GWh/year.
